Art Party Palooza on the OBX
The Outer Banks has a high concentration of incredibly talented artists. Combined with a local community that prides itself on being creative and a few hundred thousand visi-tors showing up every week in the summer, the result is a thriving art community. Art Parties are a direct result of this pool of talent and quest for creativity. Lushes with Brushes, Paint a Pup, Spin Art OBX —- these are just a few of the themed parties that local artists have dreamed up. We’ve tracked down three artists combining parties and art-making to ask them about their experience bringing creativity to vacationers and locals alike.
Brad Price-Hang 12 Studios
Before he became well known on the Outer Banks for his paintings, Brad had a full time career at as the executive Chef at Elizabeth’s Cafe in Duck, where he first displayed his work. Elizabeth’s Cafe recently closed, and Brad shifted his efforts from the kitchen to the canvas. He set up his own studio in the Seagate North Shopping Center in Kitty Hawk, where he works on his paintings and shows his art. His talent is undeniable. He is also patient, has a wonderful sense of humor, and is a very good instructor. Brad offers a great spin art class with kids—his Spin Art Pizza Party. In these classes, a 12”x 24” stretched canvas is placed on the spin machine that Brad created. Paint is poured on the spinning canvas, and colorful swirls are formed. The kids have a great time and pizza is provided—everyone’s a winner! Brad also offers adult painting parties. As of Summer 2016, Wine and Paint Night is scheduled every Wednesday throughout the busy season.
Amy Redford Art
Amy Redford is the quintessential Outer Banker. It is common for Outer Banks resi-dents to work multiple jobs. Musicians wait tables during the day, writers work at gro-cery stores, and as 7th grade social studies teacher, published author and artist, Amy fits right into that mold. Her artwork is bright and whimsical, and the finished product from her art parties re-flects that. Perhaps because she’s a teacher, her kid’s art parties are a hit. She hosts an art party once a month at La Dolce Vita in Manteo, but she also offers in-home events. She makes a point of showing up early for set-up, so all the host needs to provide is wine and people. When we caught up with her at the Wedding Expo in Jan-uary, she mentioned that she has also instructed a couple of bridal parties that were a blast.
Local Color-Meghan Sadler
Meghan Sadler is the artist behind Lushes with Brushes. On her website she describes her Local Color Studio as “. . . founded upon the belief that art is for everyone.” Every Wednesday in the off-season she offers a class at Trio in Kitty Hawk, and Thurs-day at the Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills. She also has a number of classes at her Local Color Studio on Hunt Club Lane in Corolla. A retired art teacher, her ability to work with kids is fantastic. Her website offers a schedule of set classes. With so many art parties to choose from, there is every reason to unleash your inner creativity while visiting the Outer Banks.
