    Gallery Row in Nags Head

    Nags Head was the first town in the area to base its economy on tourism, and it is a very unique town. One thing that brands the town as being unique is Gallery Row–an area of the town thatThe Galleries of the Outer Banks!  runs from Bonnet Street on the south to East Driftwood.  There are too many galleries in the district to describe all of them, so I’ll just highlight a few, starting with a personal favorite:

    Seagreen Gallery (2404 S. Virginia Dare Trail, 252-715-2426) is the newest addition to the district, although the building has a long history. At one time it was the original Gray’s Department Store, so it seems fitting that the gallery is all about repurposing collectibles and antiques.

    Susan Evans creates art through reuse. Old vinyl records have been turned into clocks; two cent deposit Coke and Pepsi bottles are now juice glasses. There are mirrors framed in shards of ancient glass–and that’s just a small sampling of what’s in the store. Walking through Seagreen is like walking through a very large attic, except everything is clean, neat and beautifully displayed. It’s run by family (sons, cousins, husband and Susan).  In addition to being talented, they also seem like genuinely nice people.  An additional benefit–Surfin’ Spoon–serving frozen yogurt with an infinite variety of toppings is right next door, and it’s a great place to re-energize.

    Just down the road from Seagreen is one of the original Nags Head galleries, Seaside Art Gallery (2716 S. Virginia Dare Trail, 252-441-5418). A wonderfully eclectic blend of original art, prints (some very high quality), miniatures, carvings, statuary . . . it is a gallery that is perfect for wandering

    Finally, no tour of Gallery Row is complete without a visit to Glenn Eure’s Ghost Fleet Gallery (210 E. Driftwood, 252-441-6584). An icon of the Outer Banks art scene, simply meeting Glenn is worth a visit to the gallery. He tells bad jokes which his wife, Pat, has heard too many times.  It’s impossible not to smile when talking to Glenn.  The array of art pieces range from commercial to challenging and thought-provoking. In addition to Glenn’s work, there is always an exhibit by a local artist or artists on display. This month (April) features a self-portrait show that includes literary self-portraits.

    There are a number of other galleries in the district along with some pretty amazing jewelry at Jewelry by Gale, just across the street from the Ghost Fleet Gallery. So from your Nags Head vacation rental, take a day and enjoy this gallery tour.
