Outer Banks Restaurant Happenings for 2017

    June 29, 2017

    Restaurant Happenings

Summer is coming to the Outer Banks and it’s sort of a tradition that new restaurants open up, and one or two move. This year—2017, is no exception, and some of the restaurant moves and openings are really exciting! We think some our better-known eateries will have a chance to bring their creativity to new heights.

    New Restaurants

    Single Fin

2424 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head

Chef Pok Choeichom is an amazing chef.

Whether it’s Asian food at his current location at Pok’s Art in Kitty Hawk, or when he created the reputation for great pub food at the Outer Banks Brewing Station, Pok has an artist’s touch when it comes to food preparation.

Single Fin Outer Banks SushiHe has been passing a lot of that knowledge along to his brother Art, and with the two of them working together, it’s sort of a dynamic duo.

This allows Pok the chance to go back to his Brewing Station roots with his newest venture, Single Fin.

His description of it is classic American cuisine with a European twist. A full service bar and sushi bar will also be part of the mix.

    Russo’s Bistro and Bar

3712 N Croatan Hwy, Kitty Hawk

Joey Russo is one or our all time favorite chefs ,and consistent with his name, his Italian dishes—especially southern Italian—are off the charts great.

He’s been around the Outer Banks for some time, opening Gigi’s in Corolla a number of years ago, then on to the Brewing Station when Chef Pok opened Pok’s Art. For the past two years he’s been the executive chef at Duck Woods Country Club and his touch in the kitchen has elevated their food.

He’s once again opening his own place. Located in what was the Good Life Gourmet in Kitty Hawk, he told us he was going to keep some of the most popular items but was looking forward to better service and putting some of his specialties on the menu.

    Masala Bay

    9175 Caratoke Hwy, Point Harbor

This one is really exciting. Looking over the menu, it looks like the real deal Indian cuisine.

The restaurant is just over the Wright Memorial Bridge in Currituck County. That particular location has been a number of different restaurants, but none of them seemed to serve memorable of different dishes. This looks to be really different.Masala Bay OBX Restaurant

There is a dock as part of the property, so boaters can cruise across the sound, tie up at the dock and enjoy dinner or lunch.

    Moving to a New Location

    Country Deli

MP 9.5, The Bypass, Kill Devil Hills

Not meaning to denigrate any other sandwich that is made on the Outer Banks, but when it comes to huge—ok, humongous—sandwiches made fresh every time, no one comes even close to Country Deli…and it’s been that way for about 25 years.

The Hutchins family is moving to Kill Devil Hills, where their new location will have seating for 35 with the possibility that they could expand.

The new location should be ready by June. It’s a brand new small shopping plaza almost on the Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head town line.

    OBX Yogurt

    Southern Shores Crossing, Southern Shores

When OBX Yogurt opened two years ago in the Shoreside Shopping Plaza next to the Kitty Hawk Harris Teeter, it was nice to have frozen desert place on the north end. Unfortunately, it didn’t have very much visibility from the road.

New owner Jeff Schwartzenberg is going to change that.

He’s moving to a new larger location in Southern Shores Crossing. Located between Coastal Provisions and Steamers, Jeff is hoping to offer a different desert experience for diners.

With the extra room, he told us he’s brining in some craft sodas, traditional candies and expanded toppings for the yogurt. He’s also going back to his childhood outside of New York City and will be ordering black and white cookies, a NYC specialty.

    John’s Drive-in

We can’t end this without a special shoutout to John’s Drive-in on the Beach Road in Kitty Hawk! For anyone who has never had one of their milkshakes, a wonderfully greasy burger or a perfect dolphin boat…well, you don’t know what you’ve been missing.
