    Outer Banks Restaurants 2015 Off-Season

Blue Point Duck SunsetFor those visiting the Outer Banks in the winter months, it becomes quickly apparent that the pace of life during the off-season months is much slower than during the summer. That’s good for residents since it would be tough to keep up our summer pace year round. It would actually defeat the purpose of why we live here!

Along with the slowdown of visitors, our businesses slow down as well—especially restaurants. Some completely close their doors in the months of January and February and many cut back on hours, so finding a place to eat can become a challenge.

To assist in this process, this quick guide will aid visitors in locating just a few restaurants that remain open during our cooler winter months. For early risers in need of an early morning cappuccino or latte, the good news is that most of our coffee shops are open all winter long.

The same can be said of those who favor pizza and Chinese food. Although hours may be shorter, most keep their doors open year round. A quick call in advance will make you aware of whatever reduced hours are in place. For the fans of the Thai Room in Kill Devil Hills, Jimmy and his wife, Thom, head back to Thailand every year in January and February, so their business will not be open.

When travelling with larger groups and varying age groups, two long-standing favorites are Kelly’s Outer Banks Tavern (Nags Head) and the Black Pelican (Kitty Hawk) because both offer a wide variety of tasty food options and their size allows for easy seating in larger numbers.

The Blue Point in Duck has a phenomenal waterfront location and a popular menu. They do close over the Christmas holidays but quickly reopen with the New Year. Hours are restricted during the winter months, so we recommend calling prior to making this drive.

In Kitty Hawk, Pok’s Art in the Dunes Shops, is a relatively new takeout restaurant that features award winning creations from Chef Pok, the former Brewing Station chef. Since this is a new restaurant, we checked with Pok and his brother, Art (hence the name), about winter hours and they both nodded their heads in unison that they will be open and ready to serve guests!

Two locations in Kill Devil Hills that are worth a visit include Mama Kwan’s and Ladles. Mama Kwan’s has become a mainstay on the beach serving up Pacific Rim flavors for lunch and dinner for over ten years. Ladles is newly opened for the 2014 season, and initial reports are quite positive! They specialize in homemade soups and gourmet salads and sandwiches made from fresh local ingredients. Ladles is located on the east side of the bypass near the KDH and Nag head town line in the building that formerly housed Arby’s.

Moving to the town of Nags Head, there are two restaurants that immediately come to mind and both are located around Milpost 13. Mulligans is located on the bypass and Blue Moon Beach Grill is in Surfside Plaza which is accessible from either the bypass or the Beach Road. Both have very great bars and lunch and dinner menus that offer something wonderful for everyone.

Moving on to Manteo, Poor Richard’s Sandwich Shop on the waterfront offers a scenic view along with great sandwiches at reasonable prices. For anyone in search of lunch in downtown Manteo during the winter months, this is one of the few choices available.
