The Best Local OBX Seafood (And Where To Get It!)

Based on our location, it’s no surprise that the Outer Banks boasts some of the best seafood restaurants and markets on the coast. Whether searching for a local restaurant with a talented chef, or fresh seafood to prepare at your Outer Banks rental, this area has year round access to seasonal local seafood that is fresh, delicious and plentiful.

Where are some of the best local seafood restaurants?

Nags Head: Owen’s Restaurant – After 67 years, this is the only Outer Banks restaurant that is still owned and operated by the founding family. Their menu has items fresh off the boat including seafood, shellfish, Whole Maine lobster and more. After dinner, you can enjoy their collection of museum quality artifacts that highlight the maritime history of the OBX.

Manteo: Avenue Grille – This waterfront restaurant in Manteo is sure to please you with their eclectic take on local and world cuisines. Chef Thomas has created dishes to blend flavors using the freshest ingredients prepared with the utmost simplicity, “from the fisherman, straight to your table.”

Kill Devil Hills: Mama Kwans – This OBX dining tradition is a local’s favorite for both lunch and dinner.  Evening dining features a great variety of popular entrees including fish tacos and pepper seared Ahi tuna.

Kitty Hawk: Ocean Boulevard Bistro & Martini Bar – As the premier Martinu bar on the Outer Banks, Ocean Boulevard has a sophisticated atmosphere, delightful fresh seafood and wine pairings and live music. For a special treat, try the bay scallops and mussel pasta or the pepper seared rare tuna sashimi and poke.

Hatteras: Dinky’s Waterfront Restaurant – This waterfront restaurant is noted for beautiful sunset views and fresh North Carolina seafood. For your dining pleasure, Chef Dwight Callahan cooks up delightful nightly seafood specials.

    Seafood Markets & Grocers

Captain Malc’s Seafood Market – If you want your seafood as fresh as possible, try having it fresh cut off the dock.  In Wanchese, get backfin crabmeat, dolphin, scallop cakes, snow crab legs and more at this local seafood market. If you can’t wait to get home to eat your fresh catch, stop in at Fisherman’s Wharf and watch local boats unload their fresh catch as you dine.

Austin Fish Company – Located in the heart of Nags Head, this seafood market is family owned and operated. Offering some of the freshest seafood in the area, this is one of the oldest seafood markets on the OBX — and they’ve been in the same location for over 50 years!

Harbor House Seafood Market – You can find this seafood market in Hatteras, where they bring in local catch from their own boats. An added bonus is their homemade goodies, including mouth watering bacon wrapped scallops that are grill-ready.

Risky Business Seafood – Located in Hatteras and Avon, this family owned and operated business takes great care to ensure the quality of their seafood. With the majority of their seafood coming directly off of local boats and sold directly to customers, you can’t beat the freshness!
