Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten Update (8/29/2017 2:00PM)

Tropical Storm Conditions Are Expected In Our Area This Afternoon

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Dare County Outer Banks, including the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.

A Flash Flood Watch is currently in effect until 8:00 PM, and a High Wind Warning is in effect until midnight tonight for the Currituck Outer Banks, including the town of Corolla.

The National Hurricane Center reports the center of the disturbance is located over the Pamlico Sound at this hour, moving northeast at near 20 mph. It is forecast to move off the coast later this afternoon and into the western Atlantic Ocean.

Winds associated with the system remain near 40 mph with higher gusts.

Local radar indicates that most of the rain associated with this disturbance is offshore well away from the center (see image above). There is still a slight chance of additional rainfall this afternoon.

Swells generated by this disturbance will affect the coast during the next day or so, creating dangerous surf and rip current conditions.

Tropical Storm Conditions Are Expected In Our Area Later Today

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Dare County Outer Banks, including the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.

A Flash Flood Watch is currently in effect until 8:00 PM, and a High Wind Warning will be in effect from noon to 9:00 PM for the Currituck Outer Banks, including the town of Corolla.

The disturbance is forecast to move near the North Carolina coast today and then move away from the coast tonight. Tropical storm force winds and heavy rains are expected in the warning area through this afternoon.

The system is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with isolated amounts of 5 inches along the northeast North Carolina coast. The heavier rains may result in some flooding concerns.

Swells generated by this disturbance will affect the coast during the next day or so, creating dangerous surf and rip current conditions.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center continue to decrease the chances for this disturbance to graduate to a tropical storm (now 50%), and remind us that this system will still produce gusty winds across our area today.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Dare County Outer Banks, including the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.

A Flash Flood Watch is currently in effect until 8:00 PM, and a High Wind Warning will be in effect from noon to 9:00 PM for the Currituck Outer Banks, including the town of Corolla.

Today is not a beach day. Please do not attempt to swim in the ocean today due to rough surf and dangerous rip currents.

There are currently no evacuation orders in effect for the Outer Banks. This includes Currituck and Dare counties. We encourage you to monitor the weather during your stay.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts, can be expected through early afternoon. Please be aware of ponding water on roads with poor drainage.

Potential impacts from the main wind event are now unfolding across Eastern North Carolina. Winds of 35 to 40 mph, with higher gusts, are possible along the coast later today as the storm exits the area.

There have been no changes since the 5:00 PM update (below), although the chances of this system becoming a tropical cyclone appear to be decreasing, according to the National Hurricane Center. Regardless, tropical storm-force winds and heavy rains are expected in the area over the next day or so.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for the Dare County Outer Banks, including the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.

A Flash Flood Watch and a High Wind Watch will be in effect on Tuesday for the Currituck Outer Banks, including the town of Corolla.

There are currently no evacuation orders in effect for the Outer Banks. This includes Currituck and Dare counties. We encourage you to monitor the weather during your stay.

The peak winds of Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten are expected to be 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 55 mph. These tropical storm force winds are expected in the area beginning early Tuesday morning, lasting until Tuesday evening.

Localized storm surge, up to 2 feet, is possible in areas prone to surge starting Tuesday morning.

Rainfall amounts up to 6 inches are possible, with locally higher amounts. Some streets and roadways with poor drainage are vulnerable to ponding water. This includes NC-12, Duck Road, and many side streets in the area. Please do not drive through flooded areas. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

There is a somewhat favorable chance of tornadoes in the warning area.

Update #1 (8/28/17 11:00 AM)

We are monitoring a potential tropical storm in the Atlantic as it moves northward from the Florida peninsula. Towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head are currently under a Tropical Storm Warning. Tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area within the next 24 hours.

There are currently no evacuation orders in effect for the Outer Banks. This includes Currituck and Dare counties. We encourage you to monitor the weather during your stay.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten, a slow-organizing low pressure system with 35 mph winds, is currently located off the Georgia coast. The system is now moving toward the north-northeast near 9 mph. The National Hurricane Center is expecting this storm to move along the North Carolina Outer Banks on Tuesday.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Dare County Outer Banks, including Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. This means the area is expecting Tropical Storm conditions (strong winds, storm surge inundation, flooding rains, possible tornadoes) within the next 24 hours.

A High Wind Watch for the Currituck Outer Banks, including Corolla, will be in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. Sustained winds of 35-45 mph with higher gusts are anticipated.

A Flash Flood Watch for the Currituck Outer Banks, including Corolla, will be in effect from late tonight through Tuesday evening. Rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches are likely.

Red Flags are posted at all area beaches today. Please do not attempt to swim in the ocean while red flags are posted.

Rain chances will increase throughout the afternoon into this evening. Showers and thunderstorms are very likely tonight into tomorrow. Tropical storm force winds are expected to arrive in the Tropical Storm Warning areas Tuesday morning, with the strongest winds expected Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening as the storm exits.

Dare County Emergency Management encourages residents and visitors to secure light outdoor furniture, garbage cans and other loose, lightweight objects before the onset of strong winds and heavy rain this evening.
