Watching Hurricane Irma (9/8/2017 5:00 PM)

This is our last Irma posting unless something drastic happens that affects our area.

The center of Hurricane Irma is forecast to remain several hundred miles south and west of the Outer Banks. The official forecast continues to show Irma making landfall along the Florida Keys, and riding up the Florida Peninsula while maintaining hurricane strength. From there, Irma is forecast to weaken as it moves over Georgia and Tennessee. Locally, we are expecting a breezy, fall-like weekend with plenty of sunshine, temperatures in the low 70s and low humidity. Due to the large size of Irma, rain showers associated with the outer bands are expected begin impacting eastern North Carolina Monday into Tuesday, with no more than a 60% chance of rain. However, swells from Irma are expected to continue to build through early next week bringing a high threat of rip currents, rough surf and possible beach erosion. Remember, do not go into the ocean if Red Flags are flying.

Irma is forecast to remain several hundred miles away from the Outer Banks

Hurricane Irma is currently located over 970 miles away from Duck, NC. The current National Hurricane Center forecast, pictured left (click to enlarge), shows the center of Irma making landfall along the Florida Keys Sunday morning, and travelling northward over the Florida peninsula, through western Georgia and into Tennessee over the next several days. If this holds true, the most intense weather conditions associated with Irma will remain several hundred miles from our area.

This is reflected in our National Weather Service forecast, which calls for sunny skies and fall-like temperatures through Monday. Because of Irma’s size, it will be breezy over the weekend and into next week. Currently the forecast calls for a chance of rain on Tuesday, but sunshine returns for Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Large swells associated with Irma will build through early next week, and the threat of strong rip currents will remain, according to the National Weather Service.

The entire state of North Carolina remains under a State of Emergency [link] [link], but there are no restrictions on the sale of alcohol or travelling.

There are currently no watches or warnings for any part of the North Carolina coast.

Hurricane Irma is still over 1000 miles from Duck, NC. The latest official National Hurricane Center forecast, pictured left, suggests a Florida landfall on Sunday morning. Irma is a large and powerful storm, with 12-foot seas extending over 600 miles to the northeast of the center. Therefore, our area is expecting rough surf and rip currents for the next several days. Our local forecast calls for a nice weekend with some breezes and fall-like temperatures, possible rain and wind on Monday and Tuesday, and seasonable temperatures with sunshine for the rest of next week.

There are currently no watches or warnings for any part of the North Carolina coast.

Hurricane Irma is currently located over 1000 miles from Duck, NC.  The official National Hurricane Center forecast, pictured left (click to enlarge), suggests a Florida landfall on Sunday afternoon… 750+ miles southwest of the Outer Banks. However, because of Irma’s strength and size, we will start to feel some of the fringe effects of the storm over the coming weekend. Long period southeasterly swell from Irma continues to build, resulting in a high threat of rip currents along our coast. Breezy conditions are expected starting Saturday, and rain chances increase starting Monday.

Our governor has declared a state of emergency for all 100 counties in North Carolina, which went into effect this morning. This was a precautionary measure to facilitate the movement of resources should Irma turn in our direction. It also protects consumers by tightening the screws on any business that engages in price gouging. The declarations are available for you to read here and here. As stated by Governor Cooper, there are no restrictions on travel or the sale of alcohol.

There are currently no watches or warnings for any areas north of Florida.

There have been no forecast changes since the 11:00 AM update.

Updated forecast tracks are released by the National Hurricane Center at 5:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM.  We will post new information about Hurricane Irma around those times.

Of course, if any urgent information is released by the Hurricane Center, local weather offices or local governments we will pass it along as quickly as possible.

Hurricane Irma is currently over 1100 miles from Duck, NC. None of the official forecasts suggest a landfall in North Carolina, although we may start to feel some of the fringe effects of the storm over the coming weekend. This will include an increase in winds and strong surf.

Some guests have called with concerns about the State of Emergency that our Governor has declared. According to the NC Department of Public Safety, this was done in order to facilitate the movement of any resources that may be needed to respond to the storm. It also waives truck weight, size and hours of service restrictions so that vehicles carrying essential supplies such as food, medicine, fuel or transporting livestock or crops can get their jobs done quickly. This declaration does not restrict the sale of alcohol, does not restrict travel to and from the state, and does not impose any curfews. You can read Governor Cooper’s emergency declarations here and here.

There are currently no watches or warnings for any areas of the U.S. East Coast.

Hurricane Irma is currently over 1400 miles away from Duck, NC. Although none of the models indicate a landfall anywhere near our area, the Outer Banks will most likely feel some of the effects of Irma next week. Rain, increasing winds and dangerous surf conditions are most likely to occur beginning late Sunday afternoon.

It is still too early to tell where Irma is going, as any forecast beyond three days is very much subject to change.
