Outer Banks Ice Cream Shops
Luckily the Outer Banks has a lot of places to indulge that summertime fantasy, so here’s our Carolina Designs’ list of ice cream parlors, yogurt stops and frozen custard stands. It’s by no means complete. No preferences. . . we just listed everything alphabetically.
Big Buck’s
Timbuck II Shopping Center, 794F Sunset Boulevard, Corolla, NC
Buccaneers Walk Shopping Center, 3810 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk
Offering up to 57 ice cream flavors (some are seasonal) made from scratch daily with premium ingredients. In addition to cones, specialties include milkshakes, sundaes, banana splits, ice cream cakes, fresh fruit smoothies, frozen tea lattes, espresso bar with hot, iced and frozen options, homemade chocolates and more!
Booty Treats
1300 S. Croatan Highway (the Bypass, Milepost 9), Kill Devil Hills, NC
2600 S. Virginia Dare Trail (the Beach Road, Milepost 10.5), Nags Head, NC
Serving authentic Hawaiian shaved ice, hand dipped milkshakes, old fashioned malts, frozen yogurt, sundaes and more! Specialties include the Booty Freeze, The Junk in the Trunk Sundae and Banana Booty Split.
John’s Drive-in
3716 N. Virginia Dare Trail, Kitty Hawk, NC
An icon of locals and tourists summering on the Outer Banks, John’s is not really an ice cream shop, but they make this list based on the strength of their milkshakes. Just four flavors are available, vanilla, chocolate, mint or root beer. If there’s a better shake out there, no one’s found it yet.
Kill Devil’s Grill
2008 S. Virginia Dare Trail (the Beach Road, Milepost 9-3/4), Kill Devil Hills, NC
So many great items on this menu! Locals rave about their chicken wings, super salads, burgers and fried chicken days. But KDG makes our list for its real deal frozen custard, made fresh throughout the day. Yes, the burgers are great but the frozen custard is excellent.
Scoops
3941 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head, NC
Most everyone who’s visited Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head has tried Scoops ice cream. Located on the upper deck, this mini-lunch counter also serves a great selection of wonderfully rich homemade ice cream in cones, shakes, malts, floats, smoothies and sundaes. A second location just opened next to the Outer Banks Brewing Station on the Bypass, milepost 9.
The Spot
2805 S. Croatan Highway (the Bypass, Milepost 11), Nags Head, NC
This new addition to the Outer Banks ice cream scene is located across the street from The Secret Spot Surf, and is owned by the same folks. Early reports are that they’re serving up some killer frozen concoctions made from fresh fruit, acai bowls, 20 flavors of ice cream and more delectables!
Surfin’ Spoon
2408 S. Virginia Dare Trail (the Beach Road, Milepost 10.5) Nags Head, NC
Professional surfer Jesse Hines and his artist wife, Whitney, have created a wonderful yogurt shop with great flavor options and topping selections. The atmosphere is funky yet family friendly and even includes a game room.
The Sweet Duck
1171 Duck Road, Duck, NC
Located in the Scarborough Lane Shoppes in Duck, this shop carries a bit of everything that indulges the culinary senses, but the gelato is transcendent! They make it themselves and it’s quite apparent they know exactly what they’re doing!
Sweet Frogs
3700 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk, NC
2424 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head, NC
This is a self serve frozen yogurt experience with lots of choices! Just select a dish size, choose one (or more) of the many yogurt flavors and finish off with items from the toppings bar. Just remember, you pay be the ounce so don’t get too carried away! This is a national—now international— chain.
Zen Pops
3105 N. Croatan Highway (the Bypass, Milepost 5.5), Kill Devil Hills, NC
Imagine homemade popsicles made in small batches from fresh, natural ingredients using unique combinations of fresh fruit, herbs and vegetables. Some of the combinations definitely sound unusual, but trust us … they work! The chocolate ice cream sandwich made with coconut milk is a chocolatey indulgent wonder.
