Fall Events on the Outer Banks
It seems like every year as summer winds down, we write about what a great time the Fall is to visit the Outer Banks. There are many reasons why – the weather is near perfect, the water temperature is ideal, all the businesses are still open, the summer crowds are gone and there’s some great values in rentals.
Autumn is also the time of year when the Outer Banks event calendar explodes.
This year we thought we’d write about four big events and explain why these should be on everyone’s Outer Banks must-do list for the fall.
October 2-8
There are two outstanding music festivals taking place Wednesday through Sunday of this week, creating a perfect opportunity to spend a week on the Outer Banks.
Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival
Cory Hemilright has been putting together the Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival for the past six years, bringing together some of the best names in the industry. The venue, Roanoke Island Festival Park is the perfect setting with plenty of room to spread out and a beautiful view across Roanoke Sound.
Love Canon, who will be taking the stage at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night, has been including their mandolins and banjos into rock music. It’s still distinctly bluegrass, but with a twist.
Rhonda Vincent and the Flame will also be taking the stage Friday night. For anyone who wants to hear the best in bluegrass, they go on stage at 9:30.
Duck Jazz Festival
Duck has compiled an entire weekend of entertainment for 2017 on the Duck Town Green, which is a lovely venue for an outdoor jazz festival. Bring a picnic lunch and your favorite beverage.
The Mint Julep Jazz band takes the stage at the Village Green on Saturday from 4-6 p.m. for a lesson in swing music.
Sunday, the Robert Jospé Express Trio kicks things off at 11:00 a.m. with a driving drum beat and a pure jazz sound.
One of the highlights of the day will be Davina and the Vagabonds. Amazing vocals and great musicians.
Outer Banks Seafood Festival Oct. 21
It doesn’t get much more Outer Banks than the Outer Banks Seafood Festival. A day filled with excellent live music from national touring acts and local bands, cooking demonstrations, beer and wine, and lots and lots of seafood. This fall event that should be on everyone’s personal event calendar.
Held at the Nags Head Event Site, there’s plenty of room for the crowds, and for the past five years it’s been a very well attended event.
12th Annual Outer Banks Marathon Weekend November 10-12
Calling this event a “Marathon Weekend” doesn’t cut it. This is really more of a Family Fitness Weekend with many races to choose from.
The two big races are the Marathon on Sunday, November 12 and the Southern Fried Half Marathon on Saturday. There is also a six mile run, an 8K and 5K as well as a family fun run.
New this year are marathon relay teams. These are two, three or four person teams that meet at a designated point along the race course to exchange a baton. It gives the thrill of running in a marathon without actually having to run the entire 26.2 miles.
The marathon takes in some of the most beautiful and unexpected scenery on the Outer Banks. Beginning on the Woods Road in Kitty Hawk, the course parallels Kitty Hawk Bay, passes by the Wright Brothers Monument and runs along dirt roads in Nags Head Woods. The finish line in Manteo is famous for its food, drinks and, yes, an ice cold beer.
