Outer Banks Fitness Centers
For many of our guests who come to the Outer Banks, a visit to the gym is an important part of their daily ritual. For others, an Outer Banks getaway includes a chance to include a good daily workout that seems impossible at home. For those who want to include a vigorous work out during their stay, there are some very good local gyms that offer everything from treadmills to kickboxing.
The Outer Banks YMCA in Nags Head has it all—exercise classes, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, basketball courts . . . they even have a skate park. The largest facility on the Outer Banks, the Y has the widest range of activities for the whole family.
Weekly individual and family passes are available, and for out of town guests who just want one or two days at the gym life, there are daily admission fees as well.
One area in which the Y is particularly strong is their children’s day camps with trained instructors and interesting topics that equal happy children. They also sponsor a “Parents Night Out” on Friday evenings. The kids get pizza and exercise while parents enjoy an Outer Banks date night.
The Outer Banks Sports Club is also located in Nags Head. A large indoor facility—it used to be a movie theatre—with a focus on adult fitness and workouts. With comprehensive indoor equipment, this is a great place to go for someone looking for a more intense workout. Levi Burge, who has won a number of amateur world bodybuilding championships, is one of the trainers and his emphasis is very much on nutrition and intense workouts.
Daily and weekly passes are available. Personal trainers, including Levi, are also on staff.
With new ownership and a new name, The Gym in Kitty Hawk is hoping to reach out to a wider clientele than the previous managers. Originally a gym that specialized in kickboxing, an activity that will still be a part of the mix, but the new plan and schedule of classes shows an expanded program that includes martial arts, yoga and personal training.
One of the owners, Matt Costa, is the founder of Outer Banks Bootcamp and is the race director for Runcations. For the past six years the Gym has been the home of Outer Banks Boot Camps, and it will continue in this role.
The new owners are also developing kids programs. Some of them will be a continuation of the camps Matt has developed with Outer Banks Bootcamp and others will be held at the facility.
One of the most complete facilities around, WestSide Athletic Club, is located across the Wright Memorial Bridge in Powells Point at the Kilmarlic Golf Club.
In some ways it is the most complete of all the clubs with a 5,000 square foot fitness complex, eight tennis courts—lighted tennis courts, and a 25 meter swimming pool with a poolside cafe. Especially in the summer, WestSide has a full slate of classes, lessons, tennis clinics and tournaments. Like all the other fitness centers on the Outer Banks daily and weekly memberships are available.
There are additional fitness centers and classes available on the Outer Banks, so feel free to explore all of the wonderful options available!
