    Outer Banks Art Galleries

    December 9, 2015

There’s something in the coastal Outer Banks air that inspires the artistic and creative. The OBX is home to an exceptional lot of artists, and we have a collection of fine local galleries that proudly exhibit their work. It’s difficult to highlight all of these galleries, but in the interest of assisting visitors in navigating options, here’s a list of five wonderful galleries to get you started.

    Seagreen Gallery
    Seagreen Gallery in Nags Head.

Dare County Arts Council – Manteo
Featuring artwork from Outer Banks artists from Ocracoke to Corolla, the DCAC gallery is the perfect introduction to the wide range and skill of local artists. Located in the historic Dare County Courthouse, this gallery provides multiple rooms filled with original art. A great time to visit is the first Friday of the month when downtown Manteo comes alive with their First Friday Celebration starting at 6:00 p.m.

    Seagreen Gallery – Nags Head
Old vinyl records turned into clocks, two cent deposit signs and mirrors framed in shards of ancient glass … at Seagreen Gallery it’s all about the skillful art of reuse. Picture rummaging through a grandparent’s attic and discovering a truck load of memorabilia, knick knacks and trinkets, all of which call out to be repurposed and showcased. A trip to this gallery is a fascinating look at what’s possible when creative genius meets treasures of days gone by. An additional bonus is that Surfin’ Spoon, located right next door, serves up heavenly frozen yogurt with tons of delicious toppings.

Glenn Eure’s Ghost Fleet Gallery – Nags Head
One of the first on the Outer Banks, the walls of this gallery are filled with Glenn’s distinctive art. His works include everything from his wood block work to extraordinary and complex acrylics. In addition, Glenn always has the works of a featured artist on display, and quite a few of the more successful local artists had their first show at the Ghost Fleet Gallery. Glenn is quite a character, so if he’s in the gallery, expect to hear his collection of jokes and stories with local color.

KDH Cooperative – Kill Devil HillsKDH Cooperative Gallery Studio
An art studio and gallery rolled into one, the KDH Cooperative is located in an older bright blue building on the west side of the Bypass. The upstairs is designated studio space and the downstairs is home to a gallery that features local art. The casual environment brings on the feeling of wandering through someone’s home that is decorated with eclectic art of every genre. Some of the jewelry selections are particularly strong and interesting. The gallery is always staffed by artists, hence the name co-op, and they are typically enthusiastic about the featured art.

    Greenleaf Gallery – Duck
If there is a hierarchy of Outer Banks galleries, Greenleaf may well be at the top of the list. A part of Duck for 23 years, it’s located in what was once a home on the east side of NC-12 as you enter the town center. Showcasing the art of local, regional and national artists, the owners have always been very particular about the art they place on display. At this gallery, there is something for everyone including original paintings, glass work, ceramics, woodwork, jewelry and more. All featured works are excellent examples of their chosen media, and all are beautifully presented. Part of the business district of Duck, this gallery is a short and enjoyable walk to village restaurants and shops.
