Currituck County is now the operator of the Corolla Light, Monteray Shores and Currituck Club water systems after closing on the $5 million buyout from Carolina Water Systems. The county now becomes the only water supplier operating on the Currituck Outer Banks.
With the addition of 1,400 new customers, the county will need to expand its existing reverse-osmosis treatment plant at a cost of $5.5 million to meet peak demand during the summer tourist season, County Manager Dan Scanlon has said. Until then, the county plans to blend water mainly in the summer months from the existing Carolina Water treatment plant. The long-term plan is to abandon the aging plant due because of its poor water quality, he said.
