Lowe’s Home Improvement Store Plans

On July 21st, TheOuterBanksVoice.com reported that Lowe’s submitted their site plan for a 159,000 sq.ft. home improvement store on a commercial zoned 12.8 acres between West First Street and West Landing Drive on Route 158 to the Kill Devil Hills Planning Dept.  If approved, this will be the largest retail store in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.

According to the site plan, the store will be 120,587 square feet with a partially covered garden center measuring 38,467 square feet. The parking lot would be paved with permeable concrete, providing a little over 400 spaces.

Alternative Energy Comes to the North Carolina Aquarium

North Carolina Dominion Power reported a grant of $500,000 for alternative energy demonstrations to the North Carolina Aquarium Pier in Nags Head.
The facility, formerly known as Jennette’s Pier, is under construction and is due to be completed in the spring of 2011.  It will feature environmental education programs, science camps, live animal displays, public events and fishing.
Wind turbines, solar panels and fuel cells will generate electricity on-site to offset the facility’s power needs.  And visitors will be able to see how these three energy systems will work and the role clean energy plays in protecting our oceans.

Outer Banks S.E.A.L. Free Kids Program

afety Education and Aquatic afety promotes ocean safety through education. Corolla Ocean Rescue lifeguards provide a 2 hour program instructing children ages 6-12 about the ocean, first aid, and physical fitness every Tuesday, starting June 12th through mid-August. The program, provided free of charge, is held on the beach directly across from the Currituck Lighthouse. Park in the public access parking lot and walk over the ramp.  Each participant will receive free goodies and tee-shirts are for sale on-site.

Ban on Plastic Bags Includes ALL Retail Stores on Outer Banks

Beginning October 1st under the General Assembly’s approved budget plan for the upcoming year, the ban on the use of plastic bags will include all retail businesses in Currituck, Dare and Hyde counties on the Outer Banks.  They will be required to use recycled paper bags or reusable cloth bags.  Customers using reusable bags will be continue to receive a cash refund worth the cost of the bags not used in the purchase.   

The Department of Environmental and Natural Resources will monitor the plastic bag use reduction and report on the ban’s environmental impact in January 2012.  The new law will be enforced by the State Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.
