A Future for Affordable Housing for Outer Banks Teachers

The Dare Education Foundation Board of Directors agreed to the terms of a $2.25 million, 10-year interest-free loan from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation to build 24 2 bedroom apartments that will be rented for approximately $750 per month.  There will be three buildings, eight apartments per building, located at 109 Veterans Drive in Kill Devil Hills.  These apartments will be specifically built for teachers in Dare County, North Carolina.  With completion expected by August 2008, the housing will be in place for teachers beginning the 2008-2009 school year.  To further assist with this worthy venture, the Town of Kill Devil Hills will waive $148,000 in the project’s permitting fees.

News from the Duck Homefront

Elections for a new Town Council were held in early November. Every two years, the entire council is voted into office. Once elected, the council selects a mayor from among themselves. In an effort to attract more interest and to help defer costs associated with their time, this new council will be the first to receive compensation. Now the Town Council, Planning Board and Board of Adjustments all receive compensation for their efforts.

This season, Duck will benefit from the Dare County Shoreline Commission’s plan to provide a total of 4400 linear feet of sand fencing and/or beach planting in the town. Based on an analysis performed by Duck’s Zoning Technician, Sandy Cady, the Town Council approved a plan to plant approximately 2800 feet and fence 1550 feet. Areas to be affected are spread out throughout the town and were selected based on need with regard to dune height, escarpment (or carving out) of the dunes, recent erosion patterns, and vegetative conditions.

Town of Nags Head, North Carolina Sand Fencing Project

The Town of Nags Head is accepting authorization letters requesting the placement of sand fence on the eastern face of the primary dune at residential properties along the oceanfront.  In order to be eligible, the sand fencing must be placed outside (westward) of the “wet sand” beach.  If a property owner is interested in participating in this multi-year project, they must submit a completed authorization letter (see below) requesting, and authorizing, this work to be done at their location.  If a citizen has any questions, they can contact the Public Works Director, at 252-449-4203.

Our Outer Banks Holiday Gathering

Thanks to our beloved homeowner of #577, Royal Palace, Carolina Designs Realty had an oceanfront palace for our holiday gathering on Saturday, December 15th.  Red Sky Cafe’ had all of the top of the line appliances at their finger tips to prepare a feast for kings for our celebration.  Magic Mike entranced the kids with his special show.  The Thibodeaus handed out gifts to all of the children that kept them entertained while the adults played.  The teenagers had full rein of the ground floor recreation room with pool table, foosball, TV, full size refrigerator, cooktop, dishwasher, icemaker and microwave.    Christmas themed movies ran continuously in the home theater with 13 plush seats for anyone to enjoy.  There was an exchange of gifts, music and joy of being together.  No one left empty handed.  Employee music picks were played and sung long into the night thanks to DJ Robert Brown and his karaoke machine.  Afterwards, many of the staff retired to one of the twelve spacious and amenity packed master bedrooms.

Another Happy Guest Expresses Their Appreciation

My family and I stayed in #536 Ocean Pocean at Thanksgiving.  They came in from Mississippi and Virginia.  We enjoyed that house immensely and have already reserved it for 2008.  The house was so well appointed and stocked.  (We are kitchen people and loved the well-stocked kitchen with nice pots – Cuisanart – and utensils!)  And your realty company was the best I’ve rented from in the 6 years we’ve been getting together at Thanksgiving.  From the initial reservations to the key pick-up to the maintenance fellow who came to replace a light fixture that fell down, everyone was efficient, courteous and helpful, traits that are not always common here on the Outer Banks.  Thanks for a lovely vacation and a great customer-service oriented company!    I’ve been singing your praises to anyone who wants to rent a home here.

In Celebration of Exceptional Staff, Exceptional Service

The Housekeeping Department held their annual holiday gathering to thank all of the cleaners and inspectors that provided exceptional service this year.  Due to the number of attendees, a new venue for their gathering will have to be pursued next year!  A great big ‘Thank you’ was extended to all of the exceptional staff that together helped make a successful 2007 vacation rental season.  Capt Bob’s catered the event and our very own Robert Brown provided disc jockey services for karaoke that kept people singing well into the night.
