Soar by day, swing by night
To complement Soaring 100 festivities, the First Flight Foundation is hosting a Ragtime Gala October 22nd at Duck Woods Country Club in Southern Shores. Chef Dave Melson showcases fresh, seasonal, local cuisine from hors d’oeuvres to dessert, with wine and beer included and a cash bar available.
The entertainment, underwritten by Carolina Designs Realty, Inc., begins with Outer Banks’ own, guitarist Joe Mapp, bassist Andy Rice, and Leslie Erickson, gypsy-jazz music of Django Reinhardt, followed by a surprising floorshow produced by Elizabeth R & Company. Dancing will follow with swinging, jump-blues and jazz delivered by Washington D.C. based, Terence McArdle and Big Trouble. McArdle’s group boasts a tick tight horn section playing the songs of Count Basie, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Charlie Parker, and Duke Ellington. A silent auction will round-out the evening with several selections of art, a beach home vacation, a package from Dayton to include the Dayton Air Show and tickets to the Aviation Hall of Fame; framed art from the Wright Family; and flights, of course.
Soaring 100, a four day celebration at Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills and Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, marks the centennial of Orville Wright’s world record glider flight in 1911, which is considered the birth of modern soaring. To help welcome them, three evening events have been planned including an outdoor barbeque at Kitty Hawk Kites in Nags Head on Friday, October 21; the Ragtime Gala; and a casual “meet and mingle” at Pamlico Jack’s Hideaway in Nags Head on Sunday, October 23.
For more information and tickets on Ragtime Gala reservations, which are $100 per person, visit soaring100.com or call the First Flight Foundation office at 252-491-5165.
