An Outer Banks original, millions have seen the compelling story celebrating the 117 English men, women, and children whose dream still lives on in this American original. First staged in 1937, The Lost Colony is the nation’s premier and longest-running symphonic drama. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green, The Lost Colony’s 75th anniversary season opens June 1 and plays through Aug. 23, 2012 at Manteo’s Waterside Theatre, on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The Lost Colony is the “grandfather” of all outdoor dramas and is produced by the Roanoke Island Historical Association (RIHA), a non-profit whose mission is to celebrate the history of the first English colonies on Roanoke Island, North Carolina, and to honor the founders of The Lost Colony symphonic drama through drama, education, and literature.
Tickets may be purchased from their website, www.thelostcolony.org, by phone, 252-473-4222, or at the Box Office. Monday nights this season, kids under 12 get in free.

Legislation to protect the wild mustangs on the Outer Banks won support for a new public-private management plan needed to keep the herd from becoming extinct from the U.S. House of Representatives recently. The Corolla Wild Horses Protection Act passed the House with unanimous support and now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
The proposed management plan would raise the maximum herd size from 60 horses to up to 130. Equine genetic scientists have found that at least 110 horses are needed to prevent the herd’s genetic collapse. In addition, the plan would expand the herd’s genetic pool by introducing mares from the wild mustang herd at Shackleford Banks in Cape Lookout National Seashore.
