    Come in from the cold to get warm, maybe even hot…, at the 16th Annual Chili Cook-Off at Stripers Bar & Grille, in the Shallowbag Bay Marina in Manteo from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28th.  The event is sponsored by Chilli Peppers Restaurant in Kill Devil Hills.  The cook-off competition includes individuals as well as restaurants.  Prizes will be awarded in four categories: Meat, Other Meat, Vegetarian, and Home Kitchen.  A portion of proceeds will benefit First Flight High School and Manteo High School scholarship programs.

    Admission is $10 per person, children 7-12 are $5, and children 6 and under are free. For more information, call 441-8081.

    Work began in December to restore the Bodie Island Lighthouse, a 156-foot tower on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Scaffold and platforms cover most of its surface in order to repair or replace the exterior surface.  According to The Virginian-Pilot, the 1871 lens is being restored and will be reinstalled when the lighthouse work is done.

    National Park Service Outer Banks Group budget of approximately $3 million, repair and replacement of damaged parts will include the spiral staircase, repainting the interior and replacement of electrical equipment.

    Outer Banks Music Showcase hosts Clive Allen and Tracy performing a spectacular Showcase Magic and Comedy Show with select dates offered in February, March and April at 7:30 p.m.

    Set for Wednesday, April 7 beginning at 8:00 a.m., a multi-athletic event in Currituck Heritage Park, the “Pedal-Foot-Paddle”, starts with a scenic cycle through Corolla followed by a run on the beach at low-tide, wrapping up with a kayak paddle on the Currituck Sound.

    Another fun event, “Land and Light”, starts out with climbing the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, then strolling through the park and ending at the front porch of the historic Whalehead Club.  Contestants may participate individually or as a team.

    Join the Outer Banks Running Club on Saturday, February 13th at 9:00 a.m. for the Fourth Annual Sweetheart 8k and 1 mile run/walk.  Begin and finish near the George Washington Creef Memorial Park by the lighthouse in downtown Manteo, NC. 

    This year, race proceeds will benefit the food pantry at the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church.  Participants can contribute canned and dry goods to the food pantry on the morning of the race.  The running club will also be collecting used shoes for “One World Running”,  an international program promoting an awareness of health, fitness and nutrition by providing running shoes to those in need in the United States and around the world.  Contributors of food and/or shoes will be entered into a free raffle drawing for door prizes.

    The 4th Annual Outer Banks Idol Show is scheduled for February 27th, March 6th & March 13th at 7:30pm.  This event has brought out performers from all across North Carolina and Virginia, competing for a chance to perform with the Outer Banks Music Showcase cast.  Full of talent and comedy from our mock panel of judges, this show will have you on the edge of your seat!
