North Carolina has adopted revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps and a revised Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance to maintain local eligibility for coverage under the National Flood Insurance Program. The North Carolina Floodplain Management Program has completed new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Dare County. This has resulted in changes to Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) boundaries and Base Flood Elevations (BFEs). The Floodplain Management Branch of the Geospatial and Technology Section of the North Carolina Emergency Management agency has worked with Dare County and its municipalities to bring forward the new flood maps for public comment and adoption and has also forwarded revisions to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s model flood damage prevention ordinance for local consideration and adoption.  Each town in Dare County will hold a public Hearing to receive public opinion regarding these changes.

Starting today through Friday, July 28th, the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) presents Dance ‘n Strings, a series of dance and music.  Beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the outdoor pavilion, there will be a show offered free to the public.  A combination of ballet, modern dance and stringed instruments will entertain their patrons.  On Thursday and Friday at 2:00 p.m., there will be guitar and piano solos performed in the Park’s art gallery.  For more information, call Roanoke Island Festival Park at 252.475.1500.

This is just one of many opportunities available to those of us fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the Outer Banks and all that it has to offer.

Tomorrow’s the grand opening of the new Harris Teeter – Your Neighborhood Food Market in Nags Head, North Carolina!  The store is located at Eighth Street right at milepost 10 off Route 158 behind Eckerd’s drug store.  It’s a great location for a grocery store as the liquor store is located one street over and a Ben Franklin beach goods shop in the same vicinity.  This is a good making for a one stop shopping spot.  If your vacation rental home is in Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head, this is where you will want to get your supplies for your stay.  The Outer Banks just keeps getting better and better!

If you want to “get away” while you’re away, then Coquina Beach is the place for you.  Located eight miles South of US Route 158 in South Nags Head, Coquina Beach has a wide, beautiful beach with fine, white sand.  I have never seen it crowded there.  We usually pack a large cooler and plan on spending the day.  There is a lifeguard stand and bathhouse there, but we prefer to settle further south where there are less people.

The remains of the shipwreck, the Laura Barnes, that went down in 1921 is located at the site.  You can also scoot across the highway and visit the Bodie Island Lighthouse.  The lighthouse is not open for climbing, but the setting is well worth the trip.  The grounds there are perfect for having a picnic or taking a nature walk.

After we shower off, we look forward to dinner at one of the great restaurants in Nags Head.  It is a nice way to end the day.

“We just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed staying in the house we chose through your company.  Our two small grandchildren and 5 adults had ample room and space in this lovely home.  We enjoyed the pool and hot tub, plus the cheery decor and layout of the house were ideal for us.  We especially appreciated each family having their private bath along with a guest bath.  The available amenities of the Currituck Club were a plus, with the beach not that far away.  This was our first visit to the Outer Banks and knowing we can rely on Carolina Designs to make our next vacation there a good choice for a house rental, we will be back.  Thank you for the delicious coffee you gave us, it was a daily morning treat.”

Sincerely,  The McGowan/Reuss Family,  #170, Love Shack from 6-24-06 thru 7-01-06

In Rodanthe, another vacation resort town you would come to traveling south on Route 12 from Nags Head on the Outer Banks, there is a Waterfall Action Park.  There is fun to be had by the young and young at heart in this amusement playground that has been in operation for more than 20 years.

You have your choice of more than a dozen rides, waterslides, putt-putt courses, stock car races, go-karts, speedboats and bumper cars.  There is a special section just for the little ones ages three to nine.  There is no charge for admission, you pay for the individual rides.  This is the only park of its kind on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  It is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  For more information, call 252.987.2213.

Many of you have asked for the closest airport to the Outer Banks and the best answer is Norfolk International Airport.  The airport is located at 2200 Norview Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia.  Their phone number is 757-857-3351.  Before you begin your trip to Norfolk, you may want to consider using a commuter service instead of a rental car since Norfolk is approximately 2.5 hours away from the Outer Banks.  Make your reservation with a company called The Connection.  A van driver can meet you in the baggage claim area at the bottom of the escalator when you arrive at the airport and take you to your vacation destination.  The rates are based on the time of travel, points of travel and the number of people in your party.  The full size passenger vans are all air-conditioned with enough room to handle oversized baggage.  Give them a call at 252-449-2777 to get all the details.  You will be set to arrive at your place in the sand and sun on the Beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks in North Carolina!

Plan to make a craft, have a theme or special event during your stay with us on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  My daughter visits us at our home in Duck, North Carolina several times a year.  Whenever she comes, we plan to make a craft that sometimes involves the grandchildren and other times just involve the adults.

We’ve had quite a lot of fun.  One visit, we made a wooden tray and used my husband’s power tools!  During the week of Easter, we made banners with the seasonal theme of Spring as well as painted and decorated clay pots.  It has become a challenge to think of things to make that will look good (we are not that crafty).

I have heard other families plan activities such as scavenger hunts and talent shows.  Others have had cook-offs to see who the best chef will be.

There are so many possibilities when you vacation on the Outer Banks beaches with family and friends, including just “vegging out” on the beach or by the pool.

So if you’re on a hunt and need that safety pin, then Carolina Designs Realty is the place for you!
