Outer Banks Safety Tips

July 30th, 2007

While away from your vacation rental home, lock windows and doors.  Always keep your cars locked.  Please do not leave valuables outside unattended.

Use the safety latch on the pool gate or access door to pool area.  Always monitor children when using the pool.

Children under the age of 16 are required by law to wear helmets while riding a bicycle.

Use dune walk-overs and designated beach accesses to cross the dunes.  Please protect our fragile coastline.

Use caution before entering and swimming in the ocean.  Always swim with a buddy.

During rough surf conditions on Outer Banks beaches, if red flags are flying, swimming is prohibited.

Strong littoral currents, rip currents, tidal currents near inlets, and shifting sand can make swimming dangerous, swimming safety tips are posted at lifeguard locations.  Never leave children unattended in the ocean.

Lifeguards are on the beach from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and some towns have coverage through September. Please refer to our Carolina Designs check-in newspaper for a listing of lifeguard locations on the Outer Banks.

During extended periods in the sun, drink plenty of water, use a 15+spf sunscreen (even if it seems cloudy), and be aware that alcohol will dehydrate you quickly.

Please do not use glass items at the pool or at the beach.

Drive safely, and be especially watchful of pedestrians, joggers and cyclists.

Thank you, and have a great stay!

You can have a beach bonfire on the Outer Banks

July 25th, 2007

Beach bonfires are allowed, with regulations, on beaches in Nags Head and along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Carolina Designs Realty manages close to fifty oceanfront or semi-oceanfront 4 to 16 bedroom vacation rental homes all with private pools in Nags Head, North Carolina.  There are also 40 public beach access points located in Nags Head.  For a listing of these access points, refer to our home page on our web site, www.carolinadesigns.com , at the bottom under ‘Additional Information’ called Outer Banks Beach Access and Lifeguard Information.  Simply select your favorite spot, then obtain your permit from the Nags Head Fire Department located at 5314 Croatan Highway after 5:00pm on the specific day the fire is requested.

The Nags Head Fire Department states, “Fires will not be permitted if winds are 10 knots or more. A picture ID, the address of applicant and the location for the requested fire are required. Fires cannot be built within 50 feet of any combustible material. In addition, the hollowed-out pit must be no larger than 3 feet in diameter and not less than 1 foot in depth. The fire must be attended by an adult and must be extinguished prior to leaving.

Special Email From A Happy Guest

July 23rd, 2007

“Thank you so much for all your help in securing 291 Sun Terra for my family on July 7 - 14.  We thoroughly enjoyed the house and all of its amenities.  The handicap facilities were perfect along with the elevator for my nephew.  We carried him onto the beach in front of the house in a lounge chair so he could feel ‘on the sand at the ocean’ and he got to float in the pool every afternoon.  I also rented a 4bdrm house within walking distance (thru 2 yards) that worked out perfectly for the overflow.  Again, thank you so much for all of your help.  Have a wonderful year.  We will be doing this again in 5 years so we will be in touch again.  Of course, we will need more bedrooms by then as grandchildren are arriving like rain.”

Outer Banks Favorite Eatery on the Come Back

July 20th, 2007

Despite being burned to the ground earlier this year, Senator Marc Basnight and Sandy Basnight will have Basnight’s Lone Cedar Café up and running in no time.  As a visitor’s and local’s favorite as well as a nominee for Best on the Beach for 2007, the wait on the rebuild is well worth it.  Located on the marshy sound off the causeway where US Route 64 and US Route 264 meet before the Town of Manteo, the restaurant will prove itself once again by serving up some of the most delicious fare that is offered here on the Outer Banks.  Most of the staff that worked there before the tragic fire will be returning to their beloved employers as soon as the doors re-open.

It is refreshing to see such dedicated owners of a restaurant that would make an effort to once again provide what so many consider one of the best restaurants on the Outer Banks.
